Buck, Central Experimenial Farm, Ottawa The sole object in planting shadj trees is not merely to obtain shade: indeed one main object is to complete the architecture of the street or hous: surroundings, as the case may be. Quick realization of the objects in planting a shade tree is of course de- sirable, but rapidity of growth is gen- erally looked upon as an undesirable characteristic of a shade tree. The reason is obvious perhaps. Rapid growth is generally correlated to weakness of wood and tendencies to decay, and therefore a short-lived tree is the result.
