Spalding s Athletic Library Lacrosse—The Game Lacrosse is the oldest athletic contest to have been playedon the American continent and is perhaps the oldest organ-ized game in the world. When the first settlers arrived in thiscountry they found the Indians playing a game which next towar held the chief place in their interest. The early Frenchcolonists watching this game saw in its chief implement, thestick, a strong resemblance to a bishops crozier and named itLa Crosse, and so gave to the game its present name. The game as played by the Indians was a form of warmanoeuvre, whole tribes being pitted against each other. Thegoals were situated from one to several miles apart and anypart of the surrounding landscape was playing ground.
