At the root of the thumb is usually a well-marked elevation which is named mound of Venus. The firstor index finger is said to be under the influence of Jupiter,the king of the pagan deities; because from analogy it con-tains the indices of domination and command, and the eleva-tion is therefore called the mound of Jupiter^ which, whenlarge, is said to indicateambition and love ofdisplay. The middlefinger is placed underthe dominion of Saturn,the supposed executiveof destiny or fatality.
