Ritual Tree

Thai ritual tree (xang book) made of bamboo and decorated with flowers made of light-weight wood. After the rites, Vietnamese villagers of the Thai ethnic minority sing, dance and play music with gongs, drums, bamboo clappers and wooden rice troughs. These activities represent thunder and other natural phenomena as well as the hopes of villagers for plentiful rain and abundant harvest. Exhibited at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi.
