Liver fibrosis research. Technician examines liver tissue on a video quantimeter, to determine the extent of liver fibrosis. At right is a video screen showing sectioned human liver tissue. Here, healthy liver tissue is coloured grey; fibrous connective tissue characterising fibrosis is red. A quantimeter is a device which measures tissue structures. In fibrosis, fibrous tissue may be formed as an exaggerated healing response to injury, to infection (such as caused by viral hepatitis) or liver inflammation. The specialised tissue of the liver is scarred and liver cells may be destroyed. Liver failure may result.
