Blue sky view of the orange wood shingles and three red roof levels of Iglesia Pio X church, Ancud, Chiloe Island, Chile


Iglesia Pio X, Ancud, is a typical wooden church, covered with wooden shingles or tejuelas, painted red and orange., and wooden pegged rather than nailed. The shingles are rectangular and have a 45 degree angle to shed rainwater. Three roof levels protect the entrance from the sun. A white wooden cross rises from the bell tower. Chiloe Island has some 150 churches, most built of wood, with UNESCO World Heritage status.
