TEOTIHUACAN, Mexico — The expansive view from the plaza in front of the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan. This vantage point offers a striking perspective of the ancient city's main thoroughfare, the Avenue of the Dead, stretching southward, flanked by smaller pyramids and platforms, with the massive Pyramid of the Sun dominating the eastern skyline.

Photograph by David Coleman. The view from the plaza at the base of the Pyramid of the Moon provides a breathtaking panorama of Teotihuacan's grand urban design. The Avenue of the Dead, the city's main ceremonial boulevard, can be seen extending southward from this northern terminus, its straight path emphasizing the precise planning of this ancient metropolis. The Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihuacan's largest structure, likely dominates the eastern side of the view, its imposing bulk showcasing the monumental scale of Mesoamerican architecture. Smaller pyramid platforms and structures line the Avenue of the Dead, creating a rhythmic progression of built forms that lead the eye through the ancient cityscape. This perspective highlights the city's alignment with natural features, as the avenue's axis relates to the mountain Cerro Gordo behind the Pyramid of the Moon. The reddish-brown hue of the local volcanic stone used in construction provides a unified color palette across the ruins, contrasting with the sky and any visible vegetation.
