With the children on Sundays, through eye-gate, and ear-gate into the city of child-soul . going to hold this mag-net up, and bring the needle close to the magnet. Now when I letloose of the needle with my fingersyou see how it is held by the gravity, or, as we would say, theweight of the needle, which wouldcause it to fall to the floor, is overcomeby some greater or stronger powerwhich is in the magnet. Now, you Ma-snet and NeedIe- cannot perceive that power with any of your senses; you can neitherhear it, smell it, taste it nor feel it. You can see the effect of thatpower, but the power itself you cannot see. In like manner, also, there are powers and influences all about us which we cannot per-ceive with any of our senses, but which are constantly exercisingtheir influence upon us and upon things about us. But now, by the use of this paper, I desire to show you some-thing additional. I am going to place the magnet above the paper, and the needle below the paper, and show you that even throughthe paper this influence or power which holds the needle exerts 292 MAGNET AND NEEDLE. You will see now that when I lay the needle lengthwise against thepaper, with the magnet upon the opposite side, that the needle is heldup against this paper and does not fall, as it would if the magnetwere removed. You will notice also that, as I move this magnetfrom place to place, the needle on the lower side of the paper fol-lows the magnet. In this simple little experiment you are able tosee the magnet, but suppose for a moment that this paper wereincreased in size until it was as large as the ceiling of this entireroom. You will understand that then the magnet and any personmoving the magnet might be entirely out of sight, and as the magnet would be moved from place toplace on the upper side of thepaper, entirely out of view, theneedle on the lower side, whichcould be easily seen, would movefrom place to place, following themagnet. This little experiment illus-trates
