Scottish mountain Ben Cruachan in late autumn sunshine from above Cladich in Argyll

Editorial use only. The Ben Cruachan massif is one of the most impressive groups of mountains in Scotland with Ben Cruachan itself reaching 1126 metres almost from sea level. The mountain is host to a pump storage scheme and the dam can just be seen below the cloud. Water is let down to generate energy at times of high demand and returned from Loch Awe when excess energy is available in the network. The power station has a visitor centre attached on the shores of Loch Awe and this is also the departure point for an endless stream of climbers wishing to ascend the peaks of Cruachan.
