Senator introduced legislation she sponsored in the Senate as U. S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney and U. S. Representatives Nydia Velázquez and John Katko (not present) co-sponsoring it in Congress in light of emergence ne COVID-19 variant Omicron, potentially more threatening to create and funded by US government pandemic response centers of excellence to prepare for future variants and help prevent public health emergencies. COVID-19 and Pandemic Response Centers of Excellence Act would designate academic medical centers as research and communication hubs that would improve the United States’ ability to swiftly respond to emerging public health threats. They were joined by Mark J. Mulligan, MD, director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, director of the Vaccine Center at NYU Langone Health and Dr. Jay Varma, professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and director of Weill Cornell Medicine’s new Center for Pandemic Prevention and Response.
