A bounty grant to Robert Johnston is recorded onpage 260 of Volume 7 of the books for citizens marginal note calling attention to the error was en-tered there by Peter Freneau, Secretary of State, No-vember 4, 1788. The name is also indexed in the fourthvolume of Bounty Grants as in Vol. HISTORICAL NOTES. 225 The Seals of South Carolina.—South Carolina wasnever a colony.^ Carolina was established as a proprie-tary province before a single white settlement waseffected upon its soil and a form of government hadbeen provided for the province before any colonies wereplanted within it. Of course the government had tohave a seal. And one, therefore, was designed by theLords Proprietors of Carolina for the great seal of theirprovince about 1663. The original design of this sealwas found among the papers of^the Earl of Shaftesbury(Anthony Ashley Cooper, Lord Ashley) some years large wax impression of the_ seal itself was photo-graphed for Hon. Wm. A. Courtenay, then mayor ofCharleston, and a cut thereof was printed in the YearBook of Charleston for 1883, and has since been repro-tiuced in other publications. This was the official greats^al of Carolina until 1719, when that part of the pro-vince to the southwar
