McGREGOR, CHARLES : Company , 10th Battalion Gordon High-landers ; son of JohnMcGregor; born Aber-deen, 28 June 1873 ;educated CommerceStreet Public Schooland Robert GordonsCollege ; pupil teacher,Commerce StreetPublic School; enteredthe Church of ScotlandTraining College, 1892,having gained the sixthplace at the QueensScholarship Examina-tion. Concurrently with attendance there, tookthe Arts course at the University, , 1896, with First Class Honours in Mathe-matics, winning the Boxill Prize. Became. Mathematical Master in Airdrie Academy;joined the staff of his former Training College,1897 ; on the formation of the Training Centrein 1907, was appointed principal Master ofMethod. On the outbreak of war McGregor, althoughthen over forty, joined Kitcheners Army, andentered the 10th Battalion Gordon Highlandersas a Private. After training he left in July 1915for the Western Front with the rank of Sergeant,and soon rose to be Company Quartermaster-Sergeant. Wounded on the last day of April hewas taken to hospital in Calais where he died,14 May 1916. A man of great charm of manner, sterlingcharacter, and intellectual gifts of no mean order,Charles McGregor has won a sure place for hismemory in the hearts of hundreds of studentsand a wide circle of friends and posthumous work, based on the lecturesprepared for his classes, and issued for privatecirculation, is marked by close study, clear think-ing, and an attractive style
