In those eight long years of decay anddilapidation, the population increased onlyfrom 50 to 200 souls. Except for theefforts of Mr. Gilbert, there was an interreg-num here, and a prostration of the hopes ofthe town quite as profound as was the finan-cial and commercial panic in the countrygenerally.
