He studiedharmony and theory with Medemi. Talk of a pogrom drove himhome, and in 1907 the family came to New York. There he wasgiven a scholarship in the Institute of Musical Art. His pianoforteteacher was Mrs. Bertha Feiring Tapper; he studied compositionwith Dr. Percy Goetschius and R. H. Woodman. In 1911 he visitedEuropean cities with Mrs. Tapper.
