They landed, about one hundred in number, at Plymouth, already named by Captain John Smith, on December 21, 1680. They founded a townon the slope of the hill stretching east toward the sea, with a broad street, eight hundred yards long. leading down the hill, and another street crossing in the middle. Thehouses were constructed of hewn planks. Stockades guarded against sudden attacks.
