Max Brown, 27 years old from Nottingham as Homeless campaigners continue to make a stand outside Manchester Town Hall to raise awareness of the crisis in temporary housing. Demonstrators are sleeping in tents in an encampment in Albert Square; many have recently been released from prison and have no hope of accommodation. The group, called Homeless Rights of Justice, have a court appearance on Monday to be evicted, after which they will have 48 hours to leave.
Homeless Rights of Justice is peaceful demonstration against the cuts, austerity, and the homelessness around Greater Manchester. They say homeless people often feel ignored or invisible and hope this is a way of getting people’s attention about the cuts to shelters and emergency housing. The Salvation Army’s 120 bed shelter on Wilmott Street in the city centre closed 18 months ago, while The Narrowgate Project in Salford has also faced a funding crisis. An inquiry by Manchester City Council found 150 people sleeping rough in the city centre, with numbers rocketing since 2009. Benefit changes, insecure jobs and funding cuts are thought to be some factors behind the increase. Source MEN
