In 1880, through the national census,the city was heralded far and wide as having agreater percentage of increase in the decade1870 to 1880 than any other city in the country,and but two at all approached the ratio. 10 years showed a healthy growth, but asevery available site along the river front wastaken up by sawmills and lumber yards, and asthe supply of logs was giving out under thebuzz of countless saws, there was no longerroom for the rapid multiplication of mills andpopulation that had marked the preceding 10years.
