African killer bee. Illustration showing the spread of the aggressive, man-hating African honeybee (Apis mellifera adansonii) from South Africa to South America and the USA. First introduced to Brazil in 1956 to produce honey, this dangerous species is now spreading rapidly throughout South America and towards the US border. Brazil reports 300-400 human deaths a year caused by the bee, so severe and numerous are its stings. The pointed snout in the illustration is the bee's proboscis, used to gather nectar. The sting is located at the back of the body.
