It is about 8 inches long, andit is very fat. The winter plumagi! is ash gray ;the under jiarts are all white. The .sanderling in its breeding-places feeds on the buds of saxifragesand on insects, but in Britain its food is chieflymarine worms, small crustaceans, and bivalve mol-luscs.
