Piazza della Cisterna in the old town of San Gimignano, Unesco Site, with the Torre del Diavolo during the weekly market, Siena, Tuscany, Italy

Piazza della Cisterna is a square in the historic centre of San Gimignano, surrounded by medieval palaces and towers. The square is named after the underground cistern (Cisterna) built in 1287. The Torre dei Diavolo (Devil's Tower) is one of the fourteen remaining medieval towers in San Gimignano and belonged to the Palazzo dei Cortesi. The tower has a mysterious and disturbing name linked to a legend: it's said that on returning from a trip, the owner had noticed with enormous surprise that the tower was higher than he had left it. This prodigious event was immediately attributed to the diabolical intervention and so also the name of the tower, was inextricably linked to the Devil.
