. Atlas of the rare vascular plants of Ontario. Rare plants; Botany. HABITAT: Open, deciduous woodlands on sandy loam soil; alluvial river terraces; and hillsides that border streams or rivers. STATUS: Rare in Canada. Possibly extirpated in New York; rare in Louisiana and New Jersey. NOTES: In eastern North America, there are at least three interrelated taxa that comprise the "Cystopteris fragilis " complex: C. fragilis (L) Bernh., C. protrusa , and C. tenuis (Michx.) Desv. (= C. fragilis var. mackayi Lawson). Cystopteris protrusa is a diploid with spores about 29 pm long, whereas bo

Cystopteris protrusa is a diploid with spores about 29 pm long, whereas both C. tenuis and C. fragilis are tetraploids with spores about 37 pm long. Although leaf characters in Cystopteris are notoriously variable, the shape of the pinnule bases can be helpful in distinguishing these three species: the basal pinnules of fronds of C. protrusa have conspicuous stalks, whereas C. tenuis has cuneate (to more or less stalked) pinnule bases, and those of C. fragilis are truncate and mostly sessile. In addition, the stipes of C. protrusa are generally lighter in color than those of C. fragilis or C. tenuis . Finally, the rhizomes of C. protrusa have long internodes, and the apex bears dense yellow hairs and protrudes beyond the youngest leaves. Cystopteris fragilis and C. tenuis, on the other hand, have short internodes and lack both the protruding apex and the tomentum. Cystopteris protrusa is an understory plant found in rich soil in eastern North American forests. Desv. (=C. fragilis \/ar. mackay
