The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest of the woodpeckers in North America, found in mixed broadleaf/conifer forests through much of North America. Downy Woodpeckers can be attracted yards with suet or peanut butter. This particular bird illustrates the tawny breast typical plumage of the species in the Pacific Coast states probably subspecies turati. Note the red on back of the bird's crown, indicating a male.
