Perianal abscess. Close-up of a perianal abscess on the skin next to a patient's anus. Abscesses are infected pus-filled swellings surrounded and walled off by damaged and inflamed tissue. They can develop in any organ in the body as well as in the soft tissue beneath the skin. Those under the skin are usually red, painful and very tender. The usual cause of abscesses is infection by bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus, although other types of micro-organism are sometimes responsible. Treatment includes making a surgical cut in the the abscess to allow pus to drain, and antibiotic drugs to prevent a recurrence. This abscess had been drained once but quickly recurred.
