As there is a constant tendency for the copper flues to becomeclogged with salt the pans are boiled out frequently in order to keepthe heating surface of the flues perfectly clean and at their maximumefficiency. The brine drawn from the pan before boiling out goeseither back to the settlers or*to another pan. As bittern is formedrapidly in the vacuum-pan process the brine becomes impure after afew admixtures with such residual liquors and has to be entirelydiscarded at intervals.
