Whether the town-ship derived its name from the Churches, orwhether they were so called from that of thetownship, cannot be determined ; but proba-bilities favor the former. The autonomy ofthese pioneer congregations in their earlystruggles was subjected to several varia-tions. They were sometimes associatedunder one pastorate and represented in theChurch judicatories by one lay delegate,and sometimes were separate and independ-ent of each other.
