Kandahar airport, Afghanistan, satellite image. This international airport (top right) was to be heavily damaged during fierce fighting between US and Taliban troops during the US invasion of Afghanistan. It was finally taken by US marines on 14 December 2001. The airport lies 20 kilometres outside of Kandahar city in the south east of Afghanistan. Kandahar is Afghanistan's second largest city. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 23 April 2001.
