A.—Longer freighttrains than passenger trains are hauled. first put on, it worked all right, but in afew weeks it would jar the whole enginewhile making its upward stroke. In clos-ing off steam valve, just so pump wouldkeep up required pressure, it would hard-ly ever jar any; and when it did, would bevery light. We work straight air, andcarry a pressure of 40 pounds. A.—Thegovernor is evidently not you regulate the pump by thethrottle, the pressure is kept below thatpressure which controls the governor, andreally prevents it from acting as a gover-nor. Your trouble would probably belessened by easing off the dififerentialpiston. (80) A. R. N., Cleveland, O., writes:. BOILER ROOM OF THE N. V., N. H. & H. If set at 7 inches standingtravel, the piston will be 8 or more whenmaking a stop. By testing with 90 inyards, a nearer approach to the condi-tions of the true or,running travel is had;hence the 90 pounds test. See slack ad-juster paper in .Air-Brake Association(1898) Proceedings.
