A 19th Century view of Greenwich Hospital, London, England founded in 1694 on the south bank of the river Thames on the instructions of Queen Mary II, after seeing wounded sailors returning from the Battle of La Hogue in 1692. It became a permanent home for retired sailors of the Royal Navy, from 1692 to 1869. The word "hospital" was used in its original sense of a place providing hospitality for those in need of it, and did not refer to medical care, although the buildings included an infirmary constructed in the 1760s where pensioners were attended by trained medical staff.
