Cremyll Passage, to which we must now return, can be veryrough indeed, and many of the illustrious visitors of former daysmust have thought their enjoyment dearly bought by their suffer-ings in an open boat in wet and stormy weather. WILTON HOUSE, THE ENTRANCE GATES WILTON HOUSE BY THE COUNTESS OF PEMBROKE WILTON HOUSE stands upon the site of the old Abbey,which, with the surrounding estates, was granted byHenry VIII., soon after the dissolution of the monas-teries in 1539, to William, first Earl of Pembroke. The Abbeyhaving been pulled down, the house was rebuilt and completedduring the reign of Edward VI. from the designs of Hans this building only the centre of the east front remains, thegreater portion having been destroyed, presumably, by the tirewhich took place during the life of Philip, fourth Earl. Thisnobleman rebuilt the house from designs by Inigo Jones, who,being ill at the time, deputed Solomon (or Isaac) de Caux toexecute the work.
