Safety fencing recently installed to deter people from crossing the lock gates on Tib Lock on The Rochdale canal in central Manchester.
Cw 6841 New fencing at Tib lock Following the loss of life of Charlie Pope in early March 2018 by drowning in the Rochdale canal in central Manchester new fencing has been installed around part of the lock. The fencing is to direct people to the foot bridge at the tail of the lock and so discourage them from crossing the canal by walking over the lock gate balance beams. This is lock 89 of The Rochdale canal and the name of the lock is a reference to the river Tib that is culverted under the city. This view is across the head gates of the lock down onto Whitworth Street, with the route between the buildings that was the more direct route across the lock gates. The new barriers allow good access around the lock side for boats crews with an access opening half way along the lock back to the towpath while restricting the direct walking route across the lock gates ¬from Whitworth Street and Bridgewater Street so hope fully there will be no repeat of the unfortunate event that befell Charlie Pope.
