In his public lifeas a patriot and a distinguished citizen, hailed from New Hampshire. He wasa merchant in Portsmouth; a member of theNew Hampshire Provincial Congress; one ofNew Hampshires representatives in the memo-rable Continental Congress of 1776 ; a brigadier-general of New Hampshire troops; and afterthe Revolution a judge of the Superior Courtin the Granite State. 134 TWO HISTORIC LANDMARKS. He was born in Kittery, Maine, January 14, 1730, in a dwelling even then of historical note. In earlier days it had been a garrison-house, many times unsuccessfully attacked by the Indians. It is in a sightly location on the edge of the water, close by a portion of the harbor known as Whipple Cove. The front of the house looks as it did in General Whipples time.
