Member of committee which framed the ordinance of secession, Dec. 1860; Colonel 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers; Brigadier General in 1861. Mortally wounded at Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862; died two days later. Erected 1938 by The Columbia Sesquicentennial Commission of 1936.
