The Big Horn
A glorious example of iconic roadside architecture this unique expression of the American character has come to symbolize an era that has now all but vanished The Big Horn 25 feet tall with a 50 foot wingspan from horn tip to horn tip was built in Amado Arizona in 1970 by H A Tidmore It was originally built as a bait shop and boathouse for vacationers at nearby lakes But times have changed and the lakes have long since dried up J J C Andrews writing in The Well Built Elephant and other Roadside Attractions described modern day Amado this way The road from Tucson to Nogales is long hot and deserted As you approach Amado on I 90 you see through the dusty windows of your car a few low buildings and a giant pair of dazzling white steer horns You make the turn and drive into Amado itself a small town dominated by the giant sun bleached skull a perfect Hollywood symbol of dry desert death The sign over the entrance says Welcome to Amado
