A general idea of the machines maybe gathered from the illustrations ac-companying this article. In their de-sign many difficult problems have beensolved, and the details worked out areinteresting. The expanding tool proper to the tool then advances or withdrawsthe central mandrel. The central tap-ered roll is attached to this mandrel, but is left free to revolve independentlyof it by means of the friction thrust ringsshown. The driving power on the roll-ers is applied through the shell or cas-ing. This gives great strength andleaves the central roll free to adjust itselfto allow for irregularities in the pipe. The expanding machine for thesmaller sizes is somewhat similar in ap-pearance to a threading machine, aswill be seen from Fig. 2, which repre-sents a small machine for expanding. -AN EXAMPLE OF COLD-FLOWED STEEL JOINT. A SECTION OF THIS FLANGE HAS BEEN CUTAWAY TO SHOW HOW THE METAL HAS FLOWN INTO THE RECESSES is similar in appearance to the usualtype of extending tool used for boilertubes. Primarily it consists of three ormore tapered steel rollers which revolvearound a central roll or mandrel. Thelatter is tapered to correct the taper ofthe revolving rollers, and has a feedingmechanism by which it may be advancedor withdrawn while in operation. It will be seen that the feeding deviceconsists of a pin or key passing throughthe central mandrel, and threaded onits ends so that it engages with thethreaded interior of the feed rotation of this feed wheel relative pipes from 2 inches to 7 inches in di-ameter. The expanding tool of therequired size is attached to the mainspindle. This spindle rotates in a mov-able head, which can be run back andforth on the ways to engage with thepipe as desired. The driving power istransmitted to thi
