Here it wasdifficult to secure a place in which to hold service, and fora while the waiting room of the C. M. & St. P. Ry. Stationwas used. In order that the work would prove a success,it was necessary to secure a lot and build a church, thatthe future congregation might have a church home. Inthe Spring of 1886 three lots were purchased centrallylocated for the church. Ground was broken in July,and on the 25 th of the same month the corner stone waslaid, the missionaries, Trabert and Haupt, together withW. K. Frick, of Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter,. Rev. W. F. Ulery THE WORK EXPANDS 81 taking part in the services. The church was finished andconsecrated on the 28th of November, the same year. While there were a number of persons interested in theEnglish work at Fargo, the time had not yet come forthe regular organization of a congregation, and a wholeyear elapsed before the effort was made. The first regu-lar communion was held on Easter, 1887, when ten cameto the altar, and the following Sunday (April 17th) stepswere taken toward an organization, which was completedon May 18th. The following July the Rev. Mr. Uleryagain returned to the East, and the Rev. G. H. Gerber-ding was called to take his place. From that time thework has steadily progressed and St. Marks has becomeone of the leading English congregations in the city ofFargo. There were, moreover, other points that attracted thenotice of the missionaries. Attention was called toBrainerd, where were located the shop
