Sunspot observations made in 1819 and 1820 by British astronomer Charles H. Adams. Observations of sunspots (dark areas) could be made by tracing projections or (as indicated here) by direct observation. Dates and times are given below each drawing of the Sun. The dates for these observations run from 31st December 1819 to 18th February 1820. Sunspots, first observed with telescopes in 1610, are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. Sunspots are monitored over time to track solar activity.
