Edmund Burke (1729-1797), portrait by studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds, oil on canvas, or after. Burke was an Anglo-Irish statesman and philosopher born in Dublin who, after moving to London, served as a Whig Member of Parliament for many years. He was a strong critic of Britain's policy on America and his speech On Conciliation with America was published in 1775. He is widely regarded as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism.
