Natural Resources along theBaltimore and Ohio OFFICIALS of the Baltimore and OhioRailroads Commercial DevelopmentDepartment, of which H. O. Hartzellis manager, have just completed an analysisshowing there are more than 1,000 coalmines on its lines in 54 counties in 7 of thestates through which it operates and theseams of coal are minable with a coal reser\jeof 25,000,000,000 tons. In West Virginiaalone, which ranks third in the coal outputof the country, 18 billion tons of coal areavailable for steam and technical use, inmines adjacent to the Companys right ofway. This and other data compiled concerningthe mines and grades of coal in Baltimoreand Ohio territory are dealt with in theanalysis which has been issued in pamphletform under the title, Coals and TheirRelation to Economic Industrial other pamphlets have been preparedfor distribution, one dwelling on Salt andIts By-Products, which describes locationsof salt mines and chemical uses of salt;. Standard Track, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, at Havre de Grace Cut, Baltimore lo Philadelphia another, Lime, Limestone Flux, servingas a guide to manufacturers who use lime-stone in quantity, and the third, Sands?Molding and Glass, points out where thesematerials are found in abundance. The analyses made by the CommercialDevelopment Department further indicatethat a large proportion of manufacturedgoods in the United States is produced incities with a population of 50,000 or less andthat on the Baltimore and Ohio alone thereare 65 cities of 10,000 or more people prac-tically near the coal fields. Industrial plantslocated in these cities, states the report, onaccount of their nearness to the bases of rawmaterials operate at lower costs than thoseless favorably located. This is exemplifiedby one large metal fabrication plant thatchanged its location to the West Virginiacoal fields and was thereby enabled to lowerit costs one cent per pound less
