The spray may be repeated two orthree times during the first hour or two; less frequently the forehead, in the region of the frontal sinuses, feelscold, the attack may often be broken by placing a piece offlannel or some other warm article over the cold area, includingthe upper portion of the nose. Rubbing the sides of the nose and forehead with thehand or a piece of silk, brisk exercise, deep nasal respiration,and hot drinks, followed by sweating in bed, often so restorethe balance of circulation as to avert the attack. When nasal respiration is greatly impaired, especially inchildren, a cosmolin, albolene, Russian voschano-oil, or men-thol spray often acts admirably; but it may be advisable tomake semi-daily use of a 1- to 2-per-cent cocaine application,either in glycerin and water (equal parts) or in cosmolin. 30 DISEASES OF THE NOSE AND THROAT. The great prophylactics are hygienic and dietetic. Theoutside wraps should be removed immediately after entering awarm room, and the neck and chest should be sponged dailywith cold water, immediately followed by brisk friction.
