In early life he movedto Alabama, where he was edu-cated, graduating from the Uni-versity of Alabama and enteringupon the profession of law in thatstate in 1838. He served one termin the Alabama Legislature. He came to Texas in 1841 andlocated in San Augustine and began the practice of his profes-sion. In 1844 he was appointed District Judge.
