Archaeological excavation. Archaeologists working at the Sima del Elefante excavation, one of the archaeological sites at Atapuerca, Spain. Sima del Elefante is the site where the earliest known evidence of European Hominid occupation has been found (as of 2011). A mandible (jaw bone) and stone tools were found in layers dating from the Early Pleistocene, around million years ago.
