CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION. THE vermiform appendix has been somewhat tersely described1as un organe inutile et nuisible, and Mr. Treves2 has goneso far as to speak of it as being obsolete and out of date, andhas ventured to state his opinion that it is safe to predict that,in the intestine of the man of the future, there will be no suchstructure found hanging from the caecum. But whatever maybe its present service, if it indeed has any, it is undoubtedly thecase that in certain morbid conditions it becomes of the greatestpathological importance. And yet, up to within the last fewyears, but little attention has been drawn to this vestigialstructure, and even at the present day comparatively littleimportance is attached to such a study of its anatomy andpathology as it undoubtedly deserves. Thanks, however, to anumber of recent investigators, the frequency and grave con-sequences of morbid processes affecting this intestinal app
