George Elliott Benson was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Born on 24 May 1861 at Allerwash, Northumberland. He entered the army on 19 May 1880 and served in Egypt 1885, Ashanti 1895, and the Dongola Expeditionary Force 1896 and served with distinction before falling at the Battle of Brakenlaagte on 30 October 1901 during the Boer War.
