The LURE observatory domes, Haleakala High Altitude Observatory, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii, USA (Aug 2006)

Haleakala High Altitude Observatory, operated by the University of Hawaii, is located in Haleakala National Park on Maui. The original LURE (Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment) observatory domes are shown. The project was decommissioned in 2004. The north (right) dome currently houses the 2-m MAGNUM (Multi-color Active Galactic Nuclei Monitor) telescope operated by a collaboration led by The University of Tokyo. MAGNUM is used to determine distances to remote active galaxies from multicolor monitoring of their variability. The south (left) dome houses the Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System) telescope. Pan-STARRS is a wide-field imaging facility that will be used, among other things, to discover and characterize Earth-approaching objects, both asteroids and comets, that might pose a danger to our planet.
