With one of these cords which isintended to be connected with the jacks of the local common batterysubscribers, is associated a white lamp, and with the other, which isused to connect with the jacks of the recording toll trunks, a redlamp. SUBSCRIBERS local subscriber desiring to talk over a long distance line will signalhis local operator and ask for toll or long distance. The oper-ator will then insert the answering plug of a pair of tone test cordsinto the multiple jack of the calling line. She will then withdrawthe answering plug of the regular pair of cords which she insertedinto the answering jack of the calling subscribers line in responseto his call. The white lamp in the tone test cord circuit will remainunlighted as the subscriber with whose line the jack is connected hashis receiver off its hook. With the second plug of the tone testcircuit the operator will then test the multiple jacks of the record-ing toll trunk lines, and upon finding one that is not in use, will insertthe plug into it.
