Collins Marine Sciences Research Laboratory Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland Received 27 February 1975 Accepted 30 September 1975 Bartonia (Gentianaceae) in Ontario Abstract. The status of Bartonia virginica in Ontario is reviewed and a station of Bartonia paniculata ssp. pani- culata, new to Canada, is reported. Known Ontario sites for the two species are mapped and substantiating speci- mens cited. The ecology of the two species in Ontario is briefly discussed. Bartonia is a small genus of annual semi- saprophytic herbs endemic to eastern North America. Two species occur in Canada, B. pani- culata (Michx.) Muhl. {B. virginica var. paniculata (Michx.) Boivin (Boivin 1966) and B. virginica (L.) BSP. As shown by GiUett (1959, 1963), B. paniculata is completely restricted to the coastal regions in the northern part of its range and B. virginica ranges inland to Wisconsin. No Ontario records were mapped by GiUett (1959, 1963) for either species; however, judging from its distribu- tion in Quebec, New York, Michigan, and Wisconsin, one would expect the occurrence of 5. virginica
