Standing wave on a vibrating string. A standing wave, also known as a stationary wave, is a wave that remains in a constant position. If the medium (here the string) is not moving with respect to the wave, then the standing wave is a result of interference between two waves travelling in opposite directions, in this case waves reflecting from either end of the string.
