First,prizes were given for agricultural work done on the spot byschool boys. Twenty eight boys competed in digging caneholes, while twenty-four boys entered the competitionfor forking and bedding. The results are reported tohave been most satisfactory. Second, the children of theelementary schools were offered prizes for the collection pests attacking esonomic crops. Vol. X7I. No. 408. This report contains a record of work of diversifiedcharacter, and in many respects of great and permanentvalue, showing that the officers of the Department in questionnot only take an interest in their work, but also throw muchenergy into its performance. In the first place the care that is taken to preserve andimprove the beautiful Botanic Garden is most Garden is of historic interest. It is the oldest gardenof its kind in the smaller British West Indian islands, havingbeen established in the year 1765. Among other earlyintroductions were some of the original breadfruit plantsbrought to the West Indies from the Pacific Islands byCaptain Bligh in 1793. Turning now to the economic side of the work of theDepartment, it is to be noticed that great attention is paid toquestions relating to the cotton growing industry, andnaturally, as it is the chief industry in the island.
