Heseemed to regard it not only as a duty, but a source of personalgratification, to extend a helping hand at this critical moment intheu lives. 1 James Kane died 2d April, 1851, aged 80, the last survivor of hisfamily. He retiied to rest at night as usual, and was found deadin his bed the next morning. The small room which he occupiedin the fourth stor\ of the American Hotel, in the south east cor-ner, overlooked the beautiful grounds which he ornamented in his. ^ o a: - fa Recollections of Albany. 53 larly polite and courteous as seemingly to borderupon excess. But let it be remembered, to hishonor, that as no man in the city was more gene-rallyknown, so there was no one more generally ormore highly respected. The courtesy or politenessof Mr. Kane did not, however, consist in mere prosperous days, and he used to say jocosely, that his windowgave him a view of Jimmy Kaiies loalk. It may have aflFordedhim a melancholy satisfaction to contemplate the scene; but everyyear saw portions of it built upon. The grounds were first quar-tered by running Westerlo and Broad streets through them, uponwhich dwellings and churches were erected, but there still re-mained the old mansion, and many of the fine old trees which hehad planted with his own hand.
