He organized theMessiah Lutheran Church of Harrisburg, Pa., and pastor therefor six vears; then at Emmitsburg, Md., for twenty-two years;816 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES at Stoyestown, Pa., for six years; at Elk Lick, Pa., for elevenyears, and at Wellersburg, Pa., for ten years. Fifty-four yearsand eight months in the active work of the Lutheran twenty-two years of this time he was a member of theMaryland Synod, and honored by that body by being, for at leastone term, their president, and for many years as a director ofthe Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, and by electing him forsome live or six times to General REV. E. S. JOHNSTON, For the last twenty-nine years he has been a member of theAlleghany Synod. Having been reared on the territory of thisSynod, he was always looked,upon as one of the Sons of Alle-ghany Synod, and when he became a member of the Synod, theysent him to the General Synod, made him a member of the Exam-ining Committee, and twice elected him as their president. His family numbersfour sons and one daughter. Russell, the oldest, lives at Odebolt,Iowa. The next, John, is at home.
